The numbers

We’ve made progress. Let’s keep the progress going.

For too long, Surrey’s fire hall infrastructure did not keep pace with the growth of our city.

Despite Surrey adding hundreds of thousands of residents, no new fire halls have opened since 2011. That lack of investment has left us playing catch-up as our city continues to grow.

But we are finally seeing progress. Over the past four years, investments have been made to expand Fire Halls 11 and 15, and steps are now being taken toward adding a new fire hall in North Surrey.

These are important steps forward, but we are still way behind. Surrey continues to grow, and we need to keep building on this momentum to ensure our fire hall infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of our city.

Coverage
15
halls

Surrey has 15 fire halls. It had 15 in 2011.

Growth
+57%
more people since 2011

Surrey has added 265,509 residents since 2011, a 56.7 per cent increase. Every one of them is inside somebody's response area.

Staffing
1:1,600

One fire fighter for every 1,600 residents. The industry benchmark is one for every 1,000.

Fire Fighters
450

Roughly 450 of us serve the city. Vancouver has more than twice as many fire fighters, covering a third of the ground.

Underneath the layers we're just like everyone else. We live here, our kids go to school here. We just want enough of us on shift to cover the city we actually have.

What a hall does

A hall is a distance, not a building.

When a call comes in, it's critical how far the nearest crew has to travel. Add neighbourhoods without adding halls and that distance gets longer everywhere around them.

Common questions

Who we are, and who pays.

Surrey Fire Service, the Association and the Charitable Society get mixed up all the time. Here is the difference, and where the money for this giveaway comes from.

Who we are

Three names, three organisations.

Surrey Fire Service is the City of Surrey's fire department. The Surrey Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 1271, is the union for roughly 450 of Surrey's fire fighters, and it is us. The Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society is our charity, raising money for Surrey schools, healthcare and families in need since 1994.

Who pays for the prize

The Association, not the City.

The $5,000 grocery prize is provided by the Surrey Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 1271. No taxpayer money pays for it, and none of the Charitable Society's funds pay for it either.

What it costs you

Nothing.

Entering is free. No purchase, no donation, no payment of any kind, and we are not fundraising here. This campaign is about how Surrey staffs and locates its fire halls, and the election on October 17.
